There is no exact definition for an SUV. The definition of SUV varies from nation to nation. The first SUV's were built in 1930's for military use. Back then SUV's were defined as a rugged automobile vehicle built on a light truck chassis. Later by 1949, four wheel drive station wagons and carryalls were introduced in the name of SUV's. By then the definition of SUV's shifted to automobile similar to a station wagon built on a light truck frame. After 1960's the vehicles used on rough surfaces that can be driven on highways too were called as SUV's. Later 4 wheel drives were also added to the classification of SUV.
As the automobile industry evolved we have now different types of SUV's. According to the new definition any automobile that has an engine over 1500cc, ground clearance of over 170mm and an overall length more than 4000mm can be called as an SUV. However it is the automobile companies choice to name its product as an SUV or not. For example, Renault Duster which had all the features defined above was initially not called as an SUV untill recently because of upcoming SUV market the company branded this car as an SUV.
Some of the SUV's with the above definitions in India are Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Mahindra Scorpio, MG Hector, Toyota Fortuner, Tata Harrier, Mahindra Bolero, Land Rover Range Rover, Mahindra XUV 300, Ford Ecosport, Maruti S Cross, Mahindra XUV 500, Renault Duster, Jeep COmpass, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Tucson.
